Left testicle pain

I have been having a dull ache in my left testicle for a while, had antibiotics from the doctors for an infection (Epididymitis) but it hasn't helped. I'm waiting on an ultrasound but feel anxious about it as I think I'm at a higher risk of cancer, previously had an Undescended testicle when I was younger and my mother had cancer along with my nan and grandad on my mums side.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

There are many reasons for symptoms such as pain in the testicle and most won't be anything as serious as cancer. It sounds as if your doctor has taken your symptoms seriously as you've had a course of antibiotics for epididymitis, and you are going to be having an ultrasound scan to check your left testicle.

Testicular cancer is very uncommon. You may find it helpful to read the NHS information about 'What my testicles should look and feel like' here

When cancer is in the family, people often worry and assume that this greatly increases their risk of developing it, but this isn't often the case. Although the genes we inherit may influence our risk, this may not be by very much. No one is risk free and the risk of cancer increases for all of us as we get older.( over 65) This is quite a complicated topic and it might be useful to look at our section explaining genes and inherited cancer risk at this link.

Cancer is described as a genetic disease because it is caused by mistakes or faults in the genes of in a single cell. But in most cases of cancer, these gene faults develop over someone's lifetime and are not inherited. Faulty cancer genes can be passed from one generation to the next, but they are very uncommon.
