Bladder cancer

. I had blood in my pee before Christmas then after antibiotics my pee was clear, very soon it was back so I got a referral expected in the next two weeks for bladder cancer. Since being referred (just a day later) the pee became bright red looking like watered down blood.

I want to know what to expect at my first appointment. Will it just be more questions, another look at my pee or will it be tests to identify if I have cancer. What should I expect at further appointments and how long should I have to wait. I am terrified of the outcome and tests / treatment, can my husband attend with me. I can't even have an injection without him. Really scared i can't do this on my own.

Thanks for your reply in advance

  • Hello Tottyfaye and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately I can't be certain what will happen at your appointment. Some hospitals run what is called a one stop clinic for haematuria (the medical name for blood in pee) and these aim to do the tests that are needed to find out what is going on all on the same day; you may be given an appointment at one of these. Most likely you will be asked what has been happening and to provide some pee for them to test. You may also have some sort of scan and a flexible cystoscopy (this is a procedure to look inside the bladder which you can read more about on the NHS website at this link).

I don't know if your hospital policy will allow your husband to go with you, I think you will have to ask them directly and explain when your appointment comes through and you have a contact number for them.

Blood in pee needs to be properly checked out, but it can occur for several reasons and may not be linked to cancer. Waiting for appointments can be a worrying time, do what you can to manage the inevitable stress, take things one step at a time and try not to anticipate what is the matter or what the outcome might be.

If you want to give us a ring to talk anything over please do. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, 9-5.
