Early pregnancy - day of colposcopy

Hello,

I had a smear in december which came back as abnormal cells (borderline changes) and positive for HPV, following on from this I had a colposcopy but before the appointment I found out I was pregnant woo!

Due to this they didn’t do a biopsy and said they will see after my 20 week scan to double check everything however due to a very overwhelming week I’m now overthinking and worried.

Has anyone been in this situation or can give me some words of support please? I'm thinking they would of done something there and then if they were worried?

Thanks

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy and please try not to worry and rather enjoy your pregnancy.

You are not the first nor will you be the last person to find themselves pregnant after getting some abnormal cervical screening results.

Remember screening is all about prevention of cancer by picking up abnormal cells at an early stage so they can be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal.

It often takes many years for abnormal cells to turn into cancer and often if they are borderline or mild they will resolve on their own without the need of treatment, so relax and don't stress.

The colposcopy unit and screening service have strict protocols that are followed and when it comes to pregnancy they don't usually take biopsies or treat abnormal cells. However as you say they will see you in colposcopy later in your pregnancy just to make sure everything is okay and then if needed they can treat the abnormal cells after the baby is born.

You can read more about this here.

I hope this is helpful but please do talk through any further worries you may have with your own doctor or midwife as they hopefully will also be able to put your mind at rest.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
