Microscopic Haematuria and Genital Injury

Hi there,

Had a cycling accident last week and hit 'lady parts' very heavily on crossbar - ouch!   Had some pinprick-sized bleeding immediately afterwards, some cloudy urine and local discomfort. Three days later developed urinary urgency, urethral soreness after urnination and thought it was a UTI. GP diagnosed microscopic haematuria and gave me 3 days of antibiotics just in case of a UTI.

Urine sample has come back negative for infection, but am still experiencing urinary urgency and stinging AFTER urination and local urethral soreness 6 days after the accident. Spoke to another GP who started mentioning bladder cancer!   Have not even been examined even though  I told 2 GPs of accident. No mention of other possibilities either.

Have experienced symptoms like these before many years ago (20-30) when no UTI was found - was told I just had an 'irritable bladder'.

Am confused and scared and don't want unnecessary investigations when all my symptoms came on after my 'accident'.

Any suggestions?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your horrible accident and your symptoms.

Doctors have guidelines when women present with certain symptoms such as microscopic haematuria in the absence of an infection. It may still be the result of your bike injury but the doctors need to rule out anything serious such as cancer.

If they put in a referral under the two week wait, you can read about this here.

Hopefully by the time that your appointment arrives your symptoms may well have got better but at least there is something in the pipe line if you need further investigations.

I would take one step at a time. You may find that your symptoms settle down and you don't need to have any investigations but of course I can't be sure.

I do hope it all settles down for you.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply. Am confused as to why I have not been examined and why no one is focusing on my accident, before which time, I had had no symptoms for around 20 years!

The cystoscopy I had 25 odd years ago irritated my system and gave me symptoms on and off for years, so I don't want another unnecessary procedure only to be told that my current problems were as a result of my accident.

I understand the guidelines, but they do state referral only if visible haematuria cannot be explained. This was one episode of non-visible haematuria and was told by first GP that urethral/genital trauma caused by my accident could very well explain the result.

Perhaps someone could clarify. Thank you

  • Hi and thanks for coming back to us

Unfortunately no one here can say why none of the doctors so far have examined you. However I would suggest you contact the GP surgery to talk through your concerns and ask if an examination first would be possible prior to being referred else where.

As you say as the symptoms came on since the accident they are likely to be linked. They may suggest seeing how things go over the next week or so and then re assess to see if the symptoms and presence of blood is still there and then decide what does or doesn't need to happen next.

I'm sorry this has left you confused but hope things settle for you soon and that the situation is cleared up.

Do get back if you need to.

    Take care

    Naomi
