Auxiliary clearance - swollen node

Hi,

I had auxiliary clearance yesterday. Originally I had 3 nodes taken out and one had a small amount of cancer in sentinel node. I have invasive lobular cancer, 3cm lump already removed with good margins,

Yesterday I had full auxiliary clearance and my surgeon said one node was swollen but wouldn't say anymore. Is this likely to be further spread of the cancer despite 2 of 3 nodes being clear?

very worried now,

Claire

  • Hello Claire and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you needed to have an axillary node clearance and appreciate this must be a worrying time for you.

It is impossible for any of us on here to say what any of these nodes will show but try and hang in there for now.

As you know because some cancer cells were detected in the sentinel node usually an axillary clearance is needed to check for further spread. But even in the scenario that cancer cells are found in one of the nodes it doesn't necessarily mean it has had the chance to spread beyond that but it will help the doctors decide the best treatment plan for you moving forward.

There is more information about axillary node clearance here.

I hope you have good support around you to see you through this period of waiting for the results. Try and keep yourself busy and your mind on other things if you can as this can be helpful at times like this.

Do get back if you have more questions and you are also welcome to give the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here Mon-Fri 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
