Gynaecological oncology

Hi, I have had abnormal periods for a couple of months. I was finally referred to gynaecology by my gp. They booked me in for an ultrasound external and internal for today. The sonographer said everything looked ok but then 2 hours after my scan I got a call from gynaecology oncology with an appointment for next week. I'm now really worried as I had cervical cancer in 2020 and was never referred to oncology.

Has anyone got any advice or experience of this?

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern about the referral but being seen by a gynae-oncologist does not necessarily mean you have cancer. Cancer specialists will not always see people with cancer but may see them if their is a suspicion or if they have a previous history of it.

Whatever the reason for your referral this still does not mean you necessarily have cancer.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
