Postmenopausal bleeding

I finished my periods 10 years ... menopause was fairly good not many symptoms... started bleeding last week. Been to doctors waiting for scan date to come through and been for a blood test today for ovaries...

Has anyone else had a similar experience that you could share and hopefully put mind at ease

  • Hi

I started bleeding heavily just over a year into menapause. They did a ultrasound pretty quickly, just a few weeks and then a colposcopy. I had it under anaesthetic so it was fine. Then I just got a call saying not cancer. After that however it was like I didn't exist. Consultant sent me to doctor, and doctor said go back to consultant. Paid to see consultant in the end after I'd been bleeding about 3 months non stop. They came up with 2 options hysterectomy or merina coil. I opted for coil. Still bleeding a bit 2 months later but it's a lot better.

    Hope this helps

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing some post menopausal bleeding and are awaiting a scan.

There can be several reasons that this may be happening that you can read about here. Many of these causes are linked to cancer and until you have had a scan no one can really tell you what might be causing the bleeding in this instance, I'm afraid.

It can be a worrying and unsettling time undergoing tests but the important thing is this is going to be checked out to find out more.

Try not to over think things for now but take things one step at a time. Firstly it sounds like you will have an ultrasound which may involve an internal scan called transvaginal where they are able to view the female organs. From this hopefully they can see where the bleeding may be coming from that will guide any other tests or treatment you may need.

Do get back if you have more questions or you are welcome to call the nurses on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to talk things through over the phone. We're here Monday-Friday 9-5.

I hope you know more soon.

    All the best

    Naomi
