Stomach cancer

My father has stomach cancer which has spread everywhere

he just had a stent put in to help eat and swallow but still not eating as he says it makes him feel aick

hw has medication for sickness and patches for the mucus

Operating is not an option and he is too weak for chemo

what are the options if he still can't eat and it has been like this for over a week now?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear about your father's situation and appreciate this must be a difficult time for the family.

It can be really hard to see a loved one poorly and it is very natural for you to want to know what else can be done to help your father.

It is important your father's doctors and nurses are aware that he is still struggling to eat. They may want to re-assess him and the stent and try some different anti sickness tablets to see if this helps improves things.

I assume your father is trying different types of foods and nutritional supplement drinks. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error in finding what someone can and manage to tolerate to try and build them up. If he hasn't already spoken to a dietician he could ask if this would be possible to give some advice and ensure he is getting enough calories that his body needs.

I'm afraid no one here can say what the next steps may be however the doctors involved in his care are the best people to ask about this and what other treatments may be an option for him. They may be waiting to see if your father can increase his strength and energy levels in the following days and weeks before actioning a definite plan. But do ask and find out if a time can be arranged to talk through any questions or concerns you or the rest of the family may have at this time.

We have a section about stomach cancer including eating problems, treatments and coping with cancer here on our website.

I hope this is of some help to you, do get back if you have more questions or if you prefer give one of the nurses a call on our helpline Monday-Friday 9-5 on 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best

    Naomi
