Lump behind ear

Hi just coming on here for a bit of advice and hopefully some piece of mind! I've had a hard lump behind my right ear for about 3 years. It grows and strinks and it always grows when I'm stressed, not sleeping etc. I suffer with really bad anxiety and I've noticed it grows when I'm really stressed and anxious. It never completely goes down but it does swell and go down just not down completely. I've got an appointment with my GP next week to get it looked at. She said as I've had no other symptoms like night sweats, weight loss etc it's probably nothing to worry about but my anxiety is through the roof which isn't helping as it keeps swelling every few weeks and then going back down after a few days because of this ( or that's what I'm assuming) . Is this something to be worried about? I do get headaches quite often, but I don't get much sleep due to my anxiety so I feel like that could be the cause. Thank you

  • Hello Amy99 and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but to be able to tell you if this lump is worrying I would have to know what it is and I don't. But in general most lumps turn out to be nothing to worry about, while headaches which are very common, aren't usually due to anything serious.  I don't know if reading this will help to lessen your anxiety.

Seeing the GP is a good idea, and hopefully will give you some peace of mind. When you see them talk over your headaches and anxiety as well as the lump, and see what they suggest. In the meantime you could try looking at the Every Mind Matters website which has tips that might help you to cope with the anxiety. .

    Best wishes,

    Julia .

  • Thank you so much for replying. Is it a bad sign that the lump is hard? As that's what I'm most worried about but it grows and strinks so I'm not sure what to think

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us a gain,

As Nurse Julia has said most lumps turn out to be nothing serious at all. I think the fact that you have had it for such a long time would make it unlikely to be anything serious.

A hard lump could be a cyst or a swollen lymph node which are usually harmless.

It is really only your GP that can properly assess it and try and put your mind at rest.

Try and keep yourself busy and your mind distracted whilst you wait for your appointment so you don't think about it all the time.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
