Shadow on Lung in xray

Hello there I had a chest x-ray a couple of weeks ago which showed a shadow on my left lung - I have been referred for a CT scan and I have this tomorrow.

I have got myself really anxious because a couple of years ago I had what started off as a heart problem/chest pain -  I had an ultrasound which appeared to show some shading in the left area of my chest - with my symptoms they thought it was my stomach area - I then had an MRI scan which confirmed the same - ie a shadow in what they thought was my upper digestive area -  so I then had a endoscopy and colonoscopy  - but couldn't find anything to indicate what the shadow was - the pain went away and nothing really happened since then.

My question is - does anyone have any experience as to whether if an MRI scan was done looking at my stomach a couple of years ago, could they have really missed anything in my lung? Are they really narrow in the area they scan? I'm just wondering if the shadow that came up on the ultra sound and mri was in my lung after all - or would these be separate areas altogether?

im nearly 50 - was a very heavy smoker age 18 - 30 but haven't had a single puff since.

If anyone had any insight to offer I would be so grateful to hear from you x

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing some tests, this must be a worry for you and hopefully you will find out more soon.

Shadows on the lungs can be caused by lots of different things but if something unusual is picked up on an x-ray it is important it is looked into more closely to rule out a more serious cause.

Unfortunately no one here can diagnose or say what this shadow is or if something was missed on a previous scan a couple of years ago. The stomach is positioned below the lungs so they are unlikely to be picked up by any abdominal scan.

Try not to over think things for now and see what the CT shows.

Please get back if you have more questions or call us if you want to talk to a nurse. we're here Mon-Fri 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
