Thickened endometrial lining

Hi everyone

This is the first time on here and the reason I am is a terryifying consept.

5 years ago my periods just stopped (45) I left it until it had been a couple of years and thought I had better visit my GP to cross the I's and dot the T's and confirm menopause.  However, my bloods were normal.  I was referred to Endocrine and after a MRI of the head, they discovered a pituitary tumour.  So basically I was forced into menopause and didn't I through this naturally.  After the OP I had a tiny episode of spotting very slight.  Endocrine we're not worried about this at all.  However, since my OP 2 years ago this March I've had another 2 episodes, so slight but nevertheless still there.  I've just had transvaginal ultrasound to reveal a thickened lining of 5.4mm with the description of "too thick for post menopause".  I'm absolutely terrified as I have 2 children and can't bear the thought of leaving them behind if the worst happens.  Sorry for the long post but all info needs providing

  • Hello Lulu51 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the worry it is causing you.

A thickened lining of the endometrium (womb) will not be due to cancer for most women but I can understand your concern.  For most women it is caused by hormonal changes.

You may need to have further investigations and possibly a biopsy will be taken. You will need to be referred to a gynaecologist to have these tests done. While I know having these are a worry, please see that this still does not mean you necessarily have cancer.

I hope you know more soon about your situation and that you have support from family and friends.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
