Back, chest and burping

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could help please? My mum had lumpectomy surgery 3 days ago and has now started with back and chest pain (feeling like she has something stuck to cough up) and is constantly burping. Does anyone know if this is normal or if it is something to worry about?

Thankyou.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that your mum has recently had a lumpectomy.

The nurses are not here over the weekend and hopefully today her symptoms may feel a little better. If she does have any concerns about her surgery  then do give her breast care nurse a ring. They are the best people to advise as they are involved in her care.

Do remember that it is still early days since she has had her surgery and a certain amount of pain is to be expected. The burping maybe a cause of being inactive for a few days and also the effect of the anaesthetic.

Trying to gently move around the house is usually recommended. Encourage your mum to listen to her body and if she feels tired or is in pain then to stop and rest. Gradually increasing the amount she does daily she may find helps the burping and the discomfort that she is feeling.

I should imagine she may have been given some exercises to do for your arm and it's important that these start after the operation to ensure she has good movement of the arm on the affected side.

You have posted in ask the nurses but if you post on another section you may get more responses from other women who have had a similar surgery to your mum.

I do hope that some of this may be helpful. If you or your mum would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to get back to us.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Catherine

  • Thankyou for your reply Catherine. I will post to the other sections too next time. Mum feels a bit better today so hopefully was just a side effect of the anaesthetic like you say. This is all very new and I worry about her a lot.

    Thanks again.
