Recovery from removing an ovarian cyst

I had 2 ovarian cysts removed almost 2 weeks ago. The procedure was laparotomy (open surgery) because they were quite big 10cm and 8cm. I had some questions about recovery if anyone's been through this. I'm experiencing a lot of internal stomach pain, how long does this last? I'm also concerned that my stomach is quite big swollen and wondered when or if this will go down? I'm concerned I'm gaining weight because I'm not as mobile as usual and I can't do any exercise currently. Any advice? I'm also struggling to sleep as I'm not used to sleeping on my back, I feel pain if I try sleeping on my side.

  • I've recently had ovarian surgery that became open it took 4 1/2 hours the rest of the list was cancelled. My tummy was black and blue, solid and sore, l spent 5 days in hospital due to pain. Bending was really uncomfortable for about a month, while the infection cleared. My dr gave me some strong pain relief which I needed especially in the middle of the night, sleeping on my back slowly became easier when l used pillows under my legs. I didn't drive until l felt comfortable at least 6/7 weeks lm retired so have not had the push to go back to work. I take my therapy dog into schools and have just recently gone back with him. I have used Bio oil the wounds are now nice and soft ,

l hope you feel better soon take your time let it heal,

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are recovering from surgery and feeling rather fragile at the moment.

It isn't unusual to feel sore and swollen for a good 2 or 3 weeks after this type of op as there is often a lot of bruising and swelling internally and externally that needs to settle down and this does take time. Do take regular pain relief to ease things but do speak to your doctor if the pain is unbearable so they can check you over and give you stronger pain relief if needed.

Sleep can be difficult when you are needing to sleep in a different position to normal. Do try and prop yourself up and support your body with pillows and see if this helps.

Hopefully you will start feeling your normal self soon but do be kind to yourself and take it easy.

    All the best

    Naomi
