Secondary breast cancer

Hi mum has secondary breast cancer which has caused lung lessons. She has a cough which can go on for hours but doesn't bring anything up just feels like she has something stuck in her throat and is a bit fluidy. Any tips on how to make this easier for her, or if there is any treatment by for it.  Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m not sure if your mum is being supported at home by a community palliative care team, often they are known as the Macmillan team. These specialist nurses and doctors are experts in controlling cancer symptoms such as a cough. They will be able to prescribe medications that may help. Sometimes a short course of radiotherapy may be given to reduce the coughing if medications are not being effective.

If your mum does not have a palliative care team involved in her care you could ask her GP to refer her. In the meantime the GP can also assess your mum and prescribe something to help. You might also find it helpful to read our information about the support that is available to people at home with advanced breast cancer on our website here.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
