How long do you live after full stomach removal surgery

Hello lovely Nurses,

I hope you are well!

My sister has got stomach cancer and it is stage three, she is awaiting the result of the second diagnosis, she is not in this country and it is hard for me not being next to ther and not being able to help.

I have been reading online extensively about longivity of life after full stomach removal, it says it could be 5 years or more, Can you please tell me exactly how long they live after the surgery so that I calm down and plan my travel?

Thanks,

Beks.

  • Hello Beks and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your sister. This must be very hard for you particularly as she is not near by.

It is very difficult for me without being involved in her care and not knowing much about her medical situation to say very much. The best people to ask these questions are the doctors looking after her.

If she is waiting for further information about her cancer that is when the doctors will know more about her situation.  Everyone's case is so different so unfortunately the internet will not be able to tell you about her particular case. How some one will survive a particular cancer is based on so many things including how well they respond to any treatment and their general health. It really is a very individual thing.

We have some general information about stage 3 stomach cancer which you can see here

If your sister gives permission for you to speak to or email her doctors about her case -  that is probably the best way you can find out more.

I do hope that she makes a good recovery from her surgery and that you are able to see her soon.

You may find it helpful to have a chat with one of the nurses on the helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Very Best Wishes,

    Catherine
