Dr won’t take me seriously

Help, I have lost 5 stone since the summer, I can't swollow foods, I have a constant cough, I be sick blood & am in constant pain. I feel so unwell and constantly tired. But the dr won't go get my tested. I feel like I'm physically dying, I can't describe how drained I am. Can anyone help me? What do I do? I feel failed by the system

  • Hi Hannah,

I'm sorry you are feeling so poorly and feeling ignored by your doctor. It sounds as though you should definitely be taken seriously and they should be listening to your concerns. I would suggest you ask to see another doctor for a second opinion. I'm sure you will be fine but for your peace of mind they need to reassure you and get to the bottom of why you've been feeling so poorly.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you are worried about some ongoing symptoms and you feel your doctor is not taking your symptoms seriously. This must be a difficult time for you.

We are sometimes contacted by people who feel that their doctor is not taking their symptoms seriously and they ask us what they can do. But I’m afraid that we are rather limited in what we can say and do, because as you probably know, it is not possible to have tests or investigations, or to see a specialist without a GP's referral. All we can really do is to tell  people to go back and discuss things with your GP again, or ask to see another doctor in the practice. You could also speak to the practice manager at your GP practice to express your concerns.

As you have contacted us, I presume you are worried about cancer. The symptoms you describe could be due to a number of different conditions. I am unsure if you have discussed your concerns about cancer with your doctor. If not do let them know about your worries about this.

You can look at some useful tips here  on how to get the most out of your GP appointment.

Some people do decide to change GP's if they feel that their GP service has not improved despite bringing your concerns to them. If you would like to change your GP there is information on the NHS website on how to do this at this link

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
