DIEP or IMPLANT Reconstruction

Hello Everyone,

I am weighing up my surgery options and have been given 2 pathways following a double mastectomy due to me having BRCA1

1) implants; I'm worried not as natural, body may reject and will need replacing in 10/15 years, and not ideal (if) I need radiotherapy.

OR

2) DIEP FLAP reconstruction. I'm worried this would be much more major and would have scar on tummy as well as breasts

im in my 30s and am worried about lots of scarring. Does anyone have any feedback on either decision they have made?

thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand how difficult this decision is for you to make and I do hope that you have had a chance to discuss this with your surgeon.

Making a decision about what type of surgery to have is very personal and quite complex. You should have a chance to explore the different options with your surgeon. Having a look at pictures with a breast care nurse. It can also be helpful to talk this through with a clinical psychologist about the potential emotional impact of the surgery.

Macmillan have produced some information on risk reducing breast surgery which you can see here.

Breast Cancer Now have produced some information on breast cancer reconstruction and what to expect which you can see here.

I would talk to the surgeon about your worries about scar tissue and ask them what you should expect.

I have been looking for support groups for you to access. There is a nationwide support group called BRCA Umbrella which you may want to look in to here.

You may also find it helpful to contact Breast Cancer Now as they can put you in touch with others going through similar surgery. It is called 'Someone like Me'. Have a look here.

I do hope that some of these links may be helpful.

You have posted in ask the nurses but if you post in another section then you may find that you get more replies to your questions.

Even though it is helpful listening to everyone else's experiences do remember that it is a very personal decision and what is right for one person may not be right for you.

If you want to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to get back to us or give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind Regards,

    Catherine
