Has the breast cancer metastasised to the coccyx/sacrum?

My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago. She had 3 operations to remove everything from the lymph nodes and then chemo, after which she was given the all clear. She is taking Anastrozole, and in a recent bone scan was told she had developed osteopenia. Last year in February she started complaining of pain in her tailbone area now and again, and constipation, which she thought was probably caused by taking codeine for the pain. The pain has gradually got worse and worse to the point now that she can't sit for long and has trouble sleeping at night. This has been going on for 11 months now and she still has constipation. Her doctor told her that she thought it was just a strain and it would heal in time, so referred her to a physio- she has been doing physio for a couple of months but no improvement. I'm so worried that the breast cancer has metastasised  to the tailbone but my sister and my family keep telling me I'm worrying too much and that the doctors know what they're talking about. The pain is so bad now that she has booked an MRI scan after I kept nagging her so that's good. Has anyone else had any experience of bone mets and the symptoms, or just any advice they could give, I'm going out of my mind with worry, thinking that this is the real cause. Thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so worried about your sister. I can understand how frustrating it must be for her to have this continuous pain.

One of the side effects of anastrozole is the effect on bone density in the body. Breast Cancer Now have more information here.

You say that she had a recent bone scan and she was diagnosed with osteopenia which you can read about here.

The doctors seem fairly sure that pain in her tail bone is not related to her cancer diagnosis 10 years ago. Without being involved in her care it is difficult for me to say very much about her condition.

GP's have guidelines in when to look out for warning signs that the cancer may be returning. They may well have also done a series of blood tests to rule anything serious out.

Hopefully when she has the MRI this may help provide more information about what may be causing this pain.

Your sister may want to see if she can speak to her GP about getting a referral to a pain clinic to help manage her very uncomfortable symptoms.

Even though it is supportive to hear from other members on the forum, everyone's situation is slightly different so it is difficult to compare one situation with another.

I do hope that her pain settles soon. Either of you are more then welcome to give one of the nurses a ring on the helpline if you want to go through any of this.

We are here Monday to Friday, 9-5 and the number to call is 0800 800 4040

    Best Wishes,
