Cancer treatments

My dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the end of August beginning of September. He has seen his consultant once in September when he was told the cancer was in just that one place. He still hasn't been given any treatment and just keeps getting sent for test after test. It's now in his liver still no treatment plan and a just a phone appointment with the consultant. Is this a normal time frame. I don't understand why he has had no treatment and if that's why it's now in a second place. Is this normal practice?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your dad. This must be a difficult time for you both.

Although the pandemic has caused delays with diagnosing and treating people with cancer, it does seem that your dad has been waiting quite some time to be treated. As I'm not involved in his clinical care it's difficult for me to say why this is. He needs to really speak to his consultant or if he has access to a bowel nurse specialist he could discuss this further with them.

if you have any difficulty with this, it may be helpful to get in touch with PALS (Patient Advisory and Liaison Service) to have a chat about the situation and to see if they can move things along.

I hope you know more about your dad's situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
