fibroadenoma question

Hey everyone!

I'm 20 so I know I'm pretty young. In September I went to the doctors for a lump which was 10mm and they referred me to the breast clinic and had an ultrasound and they told me it was a fibroadenomas. Last week (Jan 2022) I went back to the doctors as it's getting more sore and it's now 40mm. The doctor didn't seem like she had any answered or reassurance. She was just flicking through Google for answers to all my questions. She said if I hadn't previously been diagnosed with a fibroadenoma she would rush me to the breast clinic. I'm just worried because I don't know if it's normal for the lump to grow to this size? She said for me to go back to the doctors in a month time too.

I might just be worrying but I've recently heard a story about a 24 year old girl found a lump and got told it was nothing and it was cancer :(

I just wondered if anyone has experienced anything like this, can provide reassurance or some advice?

  • Hello Katie B and thank you for your post.

Fibroadenomas are benign breast lumps that can, in some women get bigger before they get better. So, hopefully you will find that it gets smaller and then disappears. If it does not you might need to have it removed, however this is not needed for most fibroadenomas.  Another charity called Breast Cancer Now has information about them, you can see them here

Remember that because you have been seen by a breast specialist in the breast clinic that if there was any concern that you could have cancer you would have been told and sent for more investigations. I realise that reading online that someone young has breast cancer with a similar situation to yours is worrying but this is an uncommon situation.

Do follow your GP's advise and go back if you need to.

I hope you will be okay.

    Take care,

    Caroline
