Indeterminate Breast Tissue

Hello everyone, I am new here and feeling very anxious.

In November last year I had an appointment at the breast unit after finding a lump at the bottom of my left breast.

I had an ultrasound and this found suspicious breast tissue changes and multiple cysts. I then had 3 bopsys at the same appointment.

My results from these tests 2 weeks later stated that the area of changed tissue was found to be Indeterminate. The Dr stated that this meant they were unable to determine the type of tissue that was seen on the scan. The biopsy results showed normal tissue but the scan was still concerning. After asking the Dr multiple times if it could be cancer he said this could not be determined at this time.

It was then decided that I would return in 3 months for a follow up ultrasound and possibly more biopsy.

I will be due this appointment at the start of February but cannot get this off my mind. I am so scared and frustrated at not getting a definite answer.

Has anyone ever had something like this, if so what was the outcome/ your experience. Any information would be amazing as I feel really confused and frustrated with waiting.

Sorry for the long mumbled message, but desperate for information.

Thanks

M

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the worry and frustration it is causing you.

While a biopsy result is usually the best way to give a diagnoses it is unfortunately not always able to do it, so a repeat scan and possible repeat biopsy is often needed to see if a diagnosis can be made.

This will have happened to other women and you might find that somebody will get back to you with their own experience. However please be aware what happens to someone else is not necessarily going to say what will happen to you.

Hopefully your next appointment to have a ultrasound will give more information and if you do need to have a biopsy a diagnosis will be made this time and hopefully it is found that you do not have cancer.

I realise that this could be a worrying time so I hope you have the support of family and friends.

You would be welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
