Second biopsy not taken from fibroadenoma

Hi,

Im just looking for some advice if anyone has been in the same situation...

Summer 2020 I went to the breast clinic for breast pain, on ultrasound they found a fibroadenoma and did a core biopsy to make sure, results came back all clear. Fast forward to 2022, I have been to the breast clinic again as I found a prominent lump under my left nipple (same breast as before) I also get pain from burning sensation in my nipple to radiating pain from my breast into my arm pit whether it is around my cycle time or not I have the pain everyday. Even to lay on my front in bed is uncomfortable. The lump itself is not painful. The pain goes deep into my chest, GP has taken ECG of my heart as sometimes it feels like it's my heart (heart is fine, it's all coming from the naught breast!).

I had my ultrasound and the ultrasound lady told me it was the same fibroadenoma as before, no need for biopsy exactly the same size as before also. I explained I had not felt the lump when checking my breasts until recently, with her reply being I am too young to worry about cancerous lumps and to just forget about it for now. When I'm over 40 I should be more concerned. She was very quick doing the ultrasound and was more interested in telling me I am too young to think about anything worrying... I am 33.

Now this doesn't sit well with me, my mum was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive breast cancer in 2020. Her lump couldn't be found when examined, only found on ultrasound. A friend of mine also sadly passed away last year at the age of 40 after being diagnosed at the age of 36. So for the ultrasound lady to say that to me has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

Ia this normal for no second biopsy from the same fibroadenoma even though the lump is prominent and wasn't before? Am I over thinking it all because of the experiences I've been though with family and friends? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks! X

  • Hello MrsS89 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry that you are feeling uneasy about these symptoms despite your recent visit to the breast clinic.

I am not sure how often a biopsy isn't taken in this sort of situation because we don't have this sort of data, but I can follow the logic of not repeating a biopsy on something that hasn't changed in size on imaging over a few years. However I think you may be concerned that because it was quick, the ultrasound examination wasn't thorough enough, so perhaps this is something that you need to follow up with the clinic or your GP.

Statistically speaking breast cancer isn't as common in younger women as it is in women over 50, but young women with persisting symptoms still need to be properly assessed and ultrasound imaging is an important part of this. I assume you had a clinical examination as well since this usually forms part of the assessment.

I think the best thing to do is to talk things over with your GP and take it from there. Because of your mum's diagnosis and what happened to your friend, it could be that you are over thinking it, but given the circumstances that would be understandable and may be hard to shake off, so the GPs input could help.

I am not sure if it will be useful, but another charity, Breast Cancer Care has some information on breast pain at this link if you want to look at it .

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
