Swollen lymph node for 4 years

I'm 15f and I'm summer 2018(I think) I found a lump under my ear and next to the corner of my jaw, it feels hard but not like bone hard and it moves a bit . I showed my mum and she said it was probably just a swollen lymph node. I can't remember if I had a cold or anything before it came up because I have a strong immune system and when I get colds they are never really that significant. Because my mum said it was probably fine I brushed it off. Later on like a year later I told my mum that it's still there and never went down, she decided to take me to the doctor and they just said it was a reactive lymph node and it was fine. So as I was like 12-13  I brushed it off and forgot about it . One day I remembered it and decided to look online to see if it was normal but everything was telling me I have lymphoma. I have no other symptoms at all but I've read that people can go for years without symptoms and I don't think the lump has grown or anything but I also read that with some types of lymphoma it grows slowly so I could just not be noticing it. I'm really scared and have not been able to sleep for the past two nights over this I've asked my mum to book me another doctors appointment so I hope to get answers soon. I'm just her to ask if anyone has a similar situation or advice. Also I thought I'd mention that I have had swollen glands before after I've had colds wich have just gone down. (Also sorry if this makes no sense I'm not very good at English)

  • Hi there!

I ve had severa lymph nodes for a few years now. First time I ve noticed them four or five years ago. I had a real small one moving in my neck. Just like you I ve started googling and everything pointed out to lymphoma. I ve went to doctors, they ve done an ultrasound and found a couple more under my jaw. One of the doctors felt my left armpit and felt another one there. So my anxiety increased a lot! The problem was my blood tests were fine and the ultrasound just indicated reactive lymph nodes. Nobody agreed to do a biopsy simply because I had good results to tests. Because of my anxiety I started feeling really bad and shortly developed lots of lymphoma symptoms. Couldn t walk in a supermarket because I was exhausted. Didn t eat or drink properly. Didn t sleep. My mom is a GP and she dismissed everything but because I was acting crazy she agreed to do blood tests. They came screwed up but people from lab told my mom there was nothing wrong with me, I m just not taking care of me enough. So started to eat again and drink water, she even threatened me to send me to psychiatry if I don t stop worrying. Haha. Not so gentle...then I went back to university and started doing tests on my own, convinced that I m Ill! Blood tests came okay and each doctor I went to said the ultrasound looked just fine. Eventually I gave up. No surgeon would do a biopsy because no lymph node looked suspicious. I ve went to dentists, surgeons, breast ultrasound, dermatologists, ob gyn, gastroenterologist and can t remember how many other specialities. I ve checked everywhere. Doctors have done all the blood tests that would indicate an infection but nothing came up. So I gave up. This year I went to another check up, anual breast ultrasound and just by curiosity I ve asked the doctor about my armpit lymph node. He told me there was nothing. So it went down! I still have the others under my jaw and from time to time they swell. Also the one in my neck, still little. Nobody could say why I have them. But I don t think I have lymphoma. So yes...it s possible to have them forever and it s possible to never get the answer of why they came up in the first place. I was 20 when all the drama happened. Now I m 25.5.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are so worried about this lump near your ear and jaw.

Unfortunately no one here can say what this is so for your peace of mind it is a good idea to arrange an appointment to get it checked out by your GP.

As you have had it a while and it hasn't really changed and you don't mention other symptoms I think it is unlikely to be anything serious but do let the doctor assess you and see what they have to say. If they think necessary they can arrange some tests to be done.

Google is unable to diagnose people and often leads people to the wrong conclusions that can be even more worrying so avoid going on line if you can.

    Take care

    Naomi
