No cancerous cells found bronchoscopy

Hi,

Quick back story. My dad (74) had a chest infection a month ago, I pestered him to go to doctors and it cleared up but doc put him for a chest scan as standard due to his age. They found a shadow so sent for a MRI - after 2 weeks of tests they have found it is a tumour in his lung which looks like it's spread to his lymph node, there is also a 2cm lesion in his brain so they've classed it as stage 4. Obviously we are all devastated as he is completely fine and not unwell at all so it's a complete shock. We were due to have meeting with his consultant next week but this has been postponed as apparently the samples they were able to retrieve from bronchoscopy on his lymph node came back negative. Apparently the part of the node they were most worried about they were unable to as it was blocked by a large artery. The problem is now my dad has just heard the word "non cancerous " cells and is now convinced all is fine. However as far as I understand there is no doubt that this is lung cancer which has spread to his brain but they need "proof" of cancerous cells before they can refer him for treatment. Has anyone else been through this? We are now waiting for a needle biopsy which apparently could take weeks. Everything up until now has been done at speed (which we have appreciated of course) so now we are confused that everything has come to a halt whilst waiting for new biopsy. Thanks in advance

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation and appreciate this must be a worrying time for the family.

As frustrating as it must be for you sometimes a repeat biopsy does need to be carried out to give further and more precise information about a cancer. Whilst scans can pick up certain information it usually is the biopsy that can confirm the type of cancer cells that then guide the best treatment decisions for each patient.

I am sure the hospital team will be wanting to try and get things moving as quickly as they can so do encourage your dad to speak to the hospital or his GP if he hasn't heard anything soon.

We have sections about Lung cancer here but until you definitely know the type and stage for sure it may be difficult to know where your dad sits within this information.

Hopefully others who have been through similar will also reply on here but do bear in mind everyone is different and just because one thing happened for one person doesn't mean the same will happen to someone else.

Please get back if you have further questions. You are also welcome to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer talking over the phone.

    All the best

    Naomi
