Stopping Letrozole

Hi,

I was told to stop taking Letrozole after 10 years, which is now basically. Why do we stop taking it if it acts as a preventative to the cancer returning and is there then a raised risk of the cancer returning?

thanks

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern about stopping the Letrozole as you have been taking it for so long. But please be reassured that this length of time has been based on extensive research and the results of clinical trials looking at how long it should be prescribed for. Hormonal breast cancer treatments are not meant to be taken for ever.

Taking it has reduced the risk of your cancer coming back but I am afraid I cannot say by how much. Also most breast cancers if they do come back usually do within 5 years.

I think if you are very concerned about this you might want to talk with your GP about it. Also, even though it is likely that you may have been discharged from their care, you may still find that the breast care nurses (from the hospital where you were treated originally) can talk with you about this.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
