Ongoing rectal issues - help..

When I was about 16 I got the most horrific pain when emptying my bowels and noticed blood also. I had also noticed that along with this I was very constipated when it had happened and had also engaged in sexual activities related to this area. I went to the doctors where I was told about fissures and damage I may have caused and was given ointment and laxatives. If I'm being completely honest I started using the ointment then never finished the course (this has happened a few times) .. over time I felt like I wasn't noticing this problem then I'd noticed blood, awful pain and constipation all over again. Realising that it has never really gone away. I'm now 19 and after many fecal testing ranging from normal to borderline, normal blood results and a fairly normal physical examination I'm been referred to a colorectal unit to be assessed further as I ended up being quite persistent. I'll admit, most of my life I have barely drank water throughout the day, don't eat breakfast or healthy foods often like fiber fruit and veg. Although I'm aware I haven't helped the situation I've been up for days and nights now crying constantly, haven't eaten, drank, bathed all due to so much fear. Right now I have pain in that area when touched or going to the toilet and some itching along with some loose skin around the area. In my mind all I am thinking of is a high stage cancer or being terminally ill and it's ruining me. Has anyone got any advice or similar stories as I'm desperate right now ... :((((

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry that you have had many years of worrying and stressing about your health. But do remember anyone who feels they have similar stories to you are having their own experience and this may cause unnecessary concern.

Anal cancer is a rare form of cancer that is usually found in a much older population. So it would be very unusual for this to be the case of your symptoms. It will be good for you to be seen by the team at the unit so you can talk through how you are feeling, and the symptoms you are getting, but it sounds like all the testing and examinations that you have had have been normal so far.

Heath anxiety can be very crippling and take over every aspect of your life, this anxiety you have might need to be the thing that you talk through with your GP.

Here is a good link into managing anxiety, as mental and emotional health are just as important as physical.

And this is the NHS website on looking after your mental health.

Take care, and hopefully you will know more soon.

    Sarah.
