Jaw necrosis and dental extractions

Hi , I need a dental extraction after 4 years on IV biphosphonates. I realise the incidence of jaw necrosis is increased. Has anyone else been in this position who can offer advice , positive if at all posible :)

  • Hello volleydolly and thanks for posting,

I am not sure if anyone esle will come along and post, if they do, bear in mind that their experiences might not be typical, but I can understand why you would like to hear from someone on bisphosphonates who has had a dental extraction.

If a dental extraction can't be avoided for someone taking bisphosphonates, I think the dentist would be extra careful and want to check that the tooth socket is healing up ok afterwards.  If it can't be avoided, in general the benefits of having an extraction most probably outweigh the risk of developing necrosis, but I can appreciate it is a difficult decision to make. Do talk this over with your dentist so you have all the information you need to help you decide.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a ring on  Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
