CHEMO DOSAGE?

Hi I am in week 8 post chemo and radio therapy for rectal cancer.   I had 5 weeks, five days per week of 3600 mg of chemo with daily sessions of radiotherapy.  I am wondering if the chemo dosage is considered severe?   Eight weeks from treatment I am mainly pain free, but still experiencing sever fatigue and some nausea.  Is this normal?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. I can understand how frustrating it is to still feel so tired several weeks after treatment.

The chemotherapy is worked out by your weight and height so the dose is specific for you. However the combination of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy can make the side effects more severe. The nausea may be related to how tired you are feeling but of course I can't be sure.

It can sometimes be the radiotherapy that can make you so tired after treatment and this can in some cases carry on for several months. Taking some light exercise such as walking can help.

Have a look at the information on our website about chemoradiotherapy and the potential side effects here

and the long term side effects here

The tiredness is probably related to your treatment but you may want to check this with your oncologist particularly if you have a follow up appointment soon. Do let them know about the tiredness and nausea that you are experiencing as they may want to do a FBC (full blood count) just to check that you are not anaemic after your treatment.

If you haven't got an appointment then check whether you can have a blood test at your local surgery.

Be kind to yourself and don't demand too much of yourself for the next few weeks until hopefully you will feel more like yourself again.

I do hope this helps. If you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,
