Inconclusive fine needle aspiration

Hello,

I had some breast cysts confirmed by ultrasound and mammogram in Dec 2021. They offered to drain the cysts if I liked while I was there, so I agreed as they didn't seem worried about them and I thought it would help me in future breast examinations if they were gone. I had one drained in 2020 and that was fine so I was expecting the same, but then one of the cysts drained had suspicious fluid in it (blood stained) so they sent a sample to pathology. The results came back yesterday as inconclusive and they want me to come back for a core biopsy.
I'm so scared it will be cancer. Initially the consultant said she wasn't worried and they were testing the fluid as a precaution. But why would it come back inconclusive?

My appointment isn't until 10th Jan and then I'll probably have to wait a couple of weeks or longer due to the back log. I have the option of going privately and don't know whether to do that instead of it will speed things up as I'm going out of my mind with worry.

I have a disabled son who is 5 and needs me to be around for a lot longer yet. I feel so helpless, my husband keeps telling me to be positive and that I haven't been told it's cancer yet. I know he's right but I'm still struggling to sleep and eat, my stomach is in knots.

 Thanks for listening x

  • Hi and thanks for posting

It's hard waiting for appointments and results to come through especially when there has been some uncertainty about a previous result. Cancer cells are not the only explanation for blood stained fluid and it's routine practice to do a biopsy following any inconclusive result. The reason may be that the blood prevented the cells from being properly examined or there may have been some cells that weren't cancer but looked a bit different and a biopsy will provide some more information about their structure.

Regarding going privately, we can't advise you as to what to do, but bear in mind that due to the pandemic, there may well also be a wait to be seen at a private clinic.

Try and not overthink things too much at this moment although I know that's easy to say.

    All the best

    Wanda
