Should be relieved but I'm not

Hi there

I had an appointment at the breast clinic today as I found a lump and have had breast pain for 2 months now.

After the ultrasound I was given the OK to go home and told it was nothing to worry about. I had been so anxious that I grabbed by things and almost ran out of the door. But now I am home I am confused and worried. The pain is still there as is the lump and I have no idea what it is and wasn't told what it could be. For all I know they have missed something. I have breast implants so could that have interfered with the scan?

Many thanks x

  • Would you consider going to a private consultant for a second opinion? I'm sure they didn't miss anything but it will put your mind at ease. Or maybe you could go back to your plastic surgeon for a consult?

  • Hello there

I think we may have chatted last night on the phone about this. As I say I can appreciate the lack of information about what may be causing you the lump and pain is still worrying you but if they had seen anything of concern they would have ran more tests.

In regards to the breast implants these are filled with saline (translucent) water so that images such as with an ultrasound that can still pass through the implant to show up the breast tissues around them. It is however always important to let the doctor or sonographer carrying out the ultrasound that you have implants. If you are concerned they didn't acknowledge this then try and speak to the breast unit again or failing that your GP, in case they wish to re refer you back.

You can read more about breast pain here but usually this is common in younger women and often linked to hormonal changes, rib pain or a muscle or ligament strain. Rarely is breast pain a sign of breast cancer.

Most breast lumps won't be cancer either and are often the result of a fluid filled cyst or a build up of fatty tissue known as fibroadenomas and these can also enlarge and become painful around the monthly cycle. There is more information here.

As I say it is reassuring nothing obvious was picked up at your appointment and this should give you peace of mind. However if you are still concerned about the implants or the ongoing or worsening symptoms do speak to your GP.

    All the best

    Naomi
