Advice for Lymphoma

Hi,

Thank you for any who replies.

I just want advice on what to expect, so about 2 months ago I noticed I was losing weight and having sweating when I was sleeping. I work night shifts so was not sure if this is the reason I've lost weight but I've only been doing nights for around 3-4 months. I went to the doctors and done some blood, everything came back normal except my LDH levels were increased. However, prior to my tests I found a lump on my collar bone and the doctor said it was a cyst so I went back for another check up a month later which is when they done bloods. During the last month I noticed lumps on the back of my neck the doctor has said this is swollen lymph nodes but noticed another lump show. I've had an itchy scalp but thought it may be due to the fact I got my hair done in braids.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with a hematologist.

Im so worried about everything.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your recent symptoms and can understand you wanting to find out what's causing them. I'm sure you are aware there can be many causes for symptoms and not all will be the result of something as serious as cancer.

However you have done the right thing in getting checked out and  it's good that you will be seeing a haematologist for further advice.

I’m not completely sure what the haematologist will do when you see them as individual specialists do things in different ways.  But it is very likely that they will take a full history (ask you questions about your health),and do a physical examination.

Depending on the assessment the haematologist may order further tests and ask to see you again when the results are available. It may take a couple of weeks to get other tests organised. I don't think that it is common to get everything sorted in one visit. If they suggest a biopsy, it can take a couple of weeks to get the results.

You might find that the haematologist is able to give you an opinion of what they think is the matter on the day, and there may be no need for further tests. But if they are unsure you may find that they are reluctant to say much at this first appointment. Please do not assume the worst if the specialist asks for more tests. This is quite common and it does not always mean that anything serious is wrong.

I hope you know more about your situation soon.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
