Breast Biopsy

Hi, I had a mammogram then got a recall where I had further mammograms done as they had found calcification under the right nipple in one area. I then had the ultrasound and 3 biopsies taken.  Today the cancer nurse telephoned to say that they had not managed to get a large enough sample but the small amount that they tested was benign.  I was then asked to go back and have another ultrasound and further biopsies done next Wednesday.  I was relieved that what they were able to test was benign but I am now confused as to why they need to do more.
Is this usual practice as I am now concerned.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid this can sometimes happen where the biopsies are insufficient (not enough cells in the sample) or isn't a clear enough sample to definitely diagnose or confirm what the matter may be.

The majority of breast calcifications are nothing to be worried about. But they do need to be checked out just to be sure which is why they will always repeat the biopsies if they are inconclusive.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
