Colonoscopy with haemorrhoids

I have a colonoscopy appointment this Thursday (30th December 2021) and I'm concerned about having the procedure while I have haemorrhoids. Will the staff offer a numbing solution or something?

Also, I've had a colonoscopy before, and it was painful for me when they went around the bend, so what can I ask for to reduce that pain? I had gas and air last time, which didn't work well for me.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Apearisyellow and welcome to Cancer Chat.

As you've made your post in our cancer nurses section of the forum I just wanted to let you know that they return from their Christmas break tomorrow and will reply to your post as soon as they can but as your appointment is on Thursday it may be easier, and quicker, to get in touch with them on their helpline. They'll be available tomorrow between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you all the best with your colonoscopy.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are having a colonoscopy and are worried about the pain and discomfort it may cause you.

You may wish to call ahead to the department at the hospital to discuss your concerns in advance to make sure they are aware of your previous experience or you can wait until tomorrow and discuss it with them then.

There are things that may be offered to help such as pain relief, sedation as well as gas and air so do ask about these things.

We have a section about colonoscopy here and the NHS also have information here.

I hope all goes well for you tomorrow.

    Take care

    Naomi
