Recovery from Squamous cell carcinoma

My husband will soon have surgery to remove a squamous cell carcinoma on his lower leg. He is over 80. He had a lot of pain from the preliminary biopsy and it got infected. The surgeon says the wound will not be stitched so will need dressings changed at the hospital every three days. I'm concerned he will find it difficult to walk and climb stairs. Our bedroom and shower room are up two flights of stairs. Should I arrange a bed and shower on the ground floor? Also should I speak to my GP to arrange painkillers in advance?

  • Hi Fenouillard,

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties following the biopsy. I just wanted to send a reply to say that our nurses are back in on Wednesday 29th, after the bank holidays, and so you will receive a reply from them then. Apologies that it won't be sooner, but if you have any immediate concerns then of course do give the doctor or hospital a call if you can.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your husband needing some surgery for skin cancer on his leg and appreciate you have some questions.

The side effects someone may experience after an operation will vary as it also depends on the type of surgery but usually a prescription for pain killers will be given to manage any pain or discomfort your husband may experience.

We have a section about the different types of skin cancer surgery and what to expect here on our website.

It may be worth you calling ahead to the hospital to discuss any concerns you have about his mobility in the following days or weeks after the op. It doesn't sound like there would be time to make alterations to your home however they may be able to loan some equipment for downstairs whilst he is recovering if and as needed.

I really hope everything goes well for your husband but do get back in touch if you have further questions. You are also welcome to call the nurses helpline Monday-Friday 9-5 ( excluding bank holidays) on 0808 800 4040.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Many thanks for your help. I've booked a call with my GP to start the process.
