MUM IS STILL ILL AFTER 4 MONTHS

My mum had Radiotherapy for a Plasmacytoma back in August.  She is still not well.  She doesnt eat anything.  Feels nauseous all the time and very tired all the time.  She has been in and out of hospital and they just say nothing is wrong - but shes getting depressed and my poor step-dad is at his wits end. She does nothing and doesnt want to do anything.. anyone experience the same thing or know what to do??

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum and what she has been going through. It is very hard coping with cancer and it can effect all aspects of your life. The mental and emotional side can be difficult, as you expect to feel brighter once treatment has finished, but sometimes you just don't. Easily for some there can be a wave of depression post treatment which effects everything including their appetite and their interest in doing anything. This link here talks more about depression and cancer.

I think it would be good for you, or your mum, to chat to someone in your mum's team about how she has been. It might be that they can refer her for some extra support. I wonder if your mum has a specialist nurse (CNS) or if she has a hospital appointment coming up she could even talk to her GP.  If she continues to feel nauseous it might be worth looking at a second opinion so that everything has been checked, or also discussing this with the GP. They can then potentially refer her for some emotional support, like counselling, or she may need some medication like anti depressants if they feel this is depression related.

It can be so painful seeing someone you love go through what she has, and feel you don't know what to do to help. This link to our website talks about supporting someone with cancer.

Take care Nicola, and I hope your mum gets the help she needs soon. You may find it useful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday except bank holidays.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you Sarah. All very helpful. We have spoken to Macmillian and the doctors and she's had second opinions. It's all come back the same. Nothing necessary wrong but she has nausea and can't taste anything. She's not eaten properly for weeks and so her body has no fuel to help her recover. She has no energy to do anything either.  I do think the emotional support would be good. So I will look at the link you have sent.
we just need her to start to eat properly.  With the current situation it's bloody hard to get proper help or solutions. But we will keep trying!

    thank you. Nicola
