Waiting for further tests and worrying about telling my fami

Hello there,

it feels very surreal to be writing this. I am 39 years old and two weeks ago I had Covid during which I had breathing difficulties and was admitted to the hospital. The doctors did a C T scan with contrast on my chest, and as well as seeing Covid they saw an unusually high level of inflamed lymph nodes. They are concerned that I may have cancer as this response is not normal for Coronavirus apparently. There is what they refered to as a storm of lymph nodes.

I am going to have a repeat scan after Christmas and go from there. However this is all extremely confusing and frightening. It has come as a complete shock as prior to Covid I was fit and reasonably healthy. Never smoked, don’t drink, and have never had back pain or continuous cough associated with lung cancer at all. I’m presuming that if it is cancer then because they only found lymph node swelling in my chest and no masses, the next step will be to find where the cancer is? Does anyone have any similar experiences having found lymph nodes in your chest? Which type of cancer do you have and what is the prognosis? I have had many relatives who have had cancer and some have made an excellent recovery while others have not. It sounds horrendous and hugely defeatist but I really have a gut feeling that I won’t survive. I have an 8 year old son and a lovely husband and the thought of leaving them is unbearable. I am so incredibly confused about what I am dealing with and would be so grateful for any advice or support.

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear that you have had Covid and had to go to hospital. I can understand how unsettling this must be for you.

The virus has produced some unusual reactions in different people. We of course can't diagnose you but try not to think too far ahead. You may find that when you have your CT scan after Christmas that all your nodes have settled down.

If you feel unwell before your next CT scan then of course get back in touch with the doctors at the hospital. Try if you can to not dwell on it too much if you possibly can.

Even though it is supportive hearing from other members of the forum everyone's situation is unique so it is difficult to compare one person with another.

You are welcome to get back to us again if you want to talk anything through  with one of the nurses on the helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
