Period issues

Hi, i have resorted to using an online forum as to what to do next as getting a doctors appt is ridiculously difficult.

i am 22 and have been on the pill for around 4/5 years now, at the end of last year/begining of this year i started with very light bleeding and excrutiating cramps to the point i was in tears- i had no break through bleeds up to this point. I did see a doctor and they referred me due to something along the lines of the cells on the inside of my cervix were outside- which can sometimes be caused by the pill and doesn't necessarily require treatment, some women live with it. So i decided since i was still taking the pill, to not have the treatment as i the pains/bleeding had stopped by the time i saw the doctor and i didn't want the pill to reverse any treatment making me back at square one.

they have started again and i am slightly worried due to the pains being so severe that it may be endometriosis. I am not having proper bleeds, its brown and more like clumps/clots. I just don't know where to go from here and its so difficult to get a docs appt i don't know what to do.

also what worries me is my mum has had to have cancer cells removed at least 3 times now and she is currently under the gynae due to these cells. But the doctors won't do me a smear as they have said it will be rejected due to my age.

  • Hi and thanks for posting

Many people your age can have problems with irregular or painful bleeds - there can be a number of explanations including hormonal changes, sometimes endometriosis , infection or as you have indicated  already, with the cells normally seen inside the cervix on the outside. This is an ectropion and is nothing related to cancer - there is more about it here

I can appreciate that it  can cause a lot of stress when things start to go awry, but there are usually other explanations for gynae symptoms other than cancer. It is difficult getting to the GP , especially at the moment, but do keep trying so you can discuss a referral to the gynaecologist or what the next step could be. Although the GP can't do a smear as it's outside the screening programme age limit, , the gynaecologist or colposcopy clinic can do one. So do persevere with trying for an appointment.

    All the best
