Atypical cells: could they be as a result of an infection?

Hello, hope everyone is well. I have posted this in another section but I wasn't sure which would be best, so hope it's okay to post twice.

About a month ago I noticed when I yawn, at the very end of the yawn specifically, there's a bit of pressure somewhere between under my jaw and in my neck. I had an ultrasound and the sonographer saw slight inflammation but nothing jumping out as a worry, I mentioned I had melanoma (nearby on my neck) three years ago so was being cautious getting it checked and so based on that she recommended a fine needle aspiration to err on the side of caution.

During the weeks before the FNA I had a common cold, a sinus infection and covid, and I'd had covid just before the FNA.

My results have come back as showing atypical cells. As I understand it, atypical cells can be as a result of an infection, so since I just had covid before the biopsy, plus a sinus infection a week before that, I'm trying to get information to confirm whether it's totally possible that the atypical cells are due to the infections I had. Does anybody know, or have similar experience?

I have an appointment coming up to discuss the result and I believe the advice is to have a biopsy and/or removal of the lymph node. I don't want these procedures if they are unnecessary, it's very easy to say let's err on the side of caution and remove the lymph node, because of my history, but it's not so easy to be the one having the procedure.

If I didn't have a history of cancer then I was told I would have just had a follow up appointment in a few months as the inflammation didn't look concerning and probably related to my infection.

I also have, in the last few days, had a sore throat and possibly a throat infection, so this could possibly be another issue if I was to have another biopsy in a few days time, could this skew the results again. I sound like a sickly person but actually rarely get colds and flu.

I don't know if it makes a difference that my melanoma was caught very early and was stage 1b, removed fully etc.

I did have the feeling in my neck before the sinus infection, and covid, but I had another cold before this and I can't remember the timeline of this and whether the cold or the pain can first. So in the back of my mind, while I feel that the atypical cells very likely could be from the infections/viruses I've had, I am aware that it doesn't explain the feeling in my neck. Having said that,  the pain is less prominent now too.

Thanks all.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Atypical cells can sometiems be caused by inflammation and infection, but a fine needle aspiration (FNA) is only a sample and looks at cells, sometimes doctors want to take a tissue sample (which involves a different sort of examination) as well.

I can understand you asking and wanting to know more, but I think you need to wait to hear what the doctors say about this and talk over with them whatever they recommend - they are going to be your best source of information.

I hope your appointment goes well and isn't too far away.

If you want to talk anything over do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays (not BHs) 9-5,

    Best wishes,

    Julia
