Incredibly painful sorry

Had colonoscopy today ...staff including " surgeon " ..were so lovely it prob accounts for why I didnt push for answers whilst there ....i don't want to put anyone off as obviously these procedures are neccassary  but the pain was incredible...I was so shocked as had sedation ( was wide awake with it all way through and completly fine after so goodness knows how they judge what to give you )..... its not my nature to fuss but I cried and yelped all through and said several times please can you  stop !I can't breath ... but was told nearly done for next 5 or 10 min ...the worse of it was couldnt take breaths which as they kept saying " breathe!!!was worse it felt like I had broken ribs on right side and just couldn't breath in ....just panting like when giving birth!! ...surgeon immediately left as soon as tube was out,....they were all so kind and lovely I ws just kind of saying is that normal and why couldn't I breathe but no answers  ..Will contact hospital tom as its really quite traumatising .....so just make sure you ask lots of questions ...p s the prep was totally fine for me chill the drink and get it down quick :-) . .x

  • My last one was really painful.  Afterwards I was in shock.  Couldn't stop shaking.  Hope I never have another one.  Surely there are different types of medication they can use which is more effective

  • I had a colonoscopy last Christmas it was a ct scan with the injection that makes you feel as if you have peed yourself. No sedation needed as not painful the preps not pleasant. I had my results by phone a week later they referred me to gynaecology oncology as l had large complex ovarian cysts. I was seen by gynaecology oncology in two weeks. Following scans and repeated bloods l was listed and had surgery 25 October the surgeon has been great so reassuring and easy to talk to. I had my op during the Covid period due to cancer risk,

l hope your results are good and you get the quickly

take care and try to relax

  • Hi and thanks for the post

I'm sorry you had such a painful experience - nothing really prepares you for a test like this, with people experiencing a colonoscopy in many different ways and degrees of pain.

Sometimes, procedures like this can make it difficult to catch your breath as anxiety and pain takes over. Hopefully now though , you will soon get a report back from the colonoscopy which will show if there are any areas of concern.

It sounded very uncomfortable for you, but at least hopefully, there will now be some information about what may be going on regarding the symptoms which showed you needed the test.

Try and have a restful weekend and I hope things will settle down pain wise for you.

Do give us a ring if there's anything you would like to go over - on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Wanda

  • How kind of you to reply .....it wasn't anxiety sadly but an excruciating pain on right ribs side that made it impossible to breathe in ....I've called hospital to discuss as I would just like to understand what happened with the " sedation" and from what I gather the unusual severe pain ...not uncomfortable but worse than childbirth actually .....possible whatever may be wrong elsewhere caused it ..but only diviticuloutis showed up so .....anyway they WERE all so lovely ....I'm sure I'll get answers thankyou once again

  • Thankyou for sharing and your kind reply x

  • Thankyou for your reply ...its diffucult as I didn't expect it to be pain free but given I asked for " sedation" it had no impact at all ,I've had sedation for teeth and can never remember a thing so very strange as was 100% alert and left pretty soon after ...I'm honestly not complaining I'm fortunate they didn't find anything to bad so far but it was the shock.....as I said in original post I do not want to put anyone off as so many people dudnt even have sedation and were fine ..its likely to be something else that caused my pain I guess ...we shall see
