Hormone receptor advice

What does ER 0 PR 3 HER 0 mean? I have been diagnosed with invasive ductile breast cancer and these are my hormones score. Can anyone give me some advice on what these scores mean as regards treatment plan.

thank you

  • Hi sorry to hear that you've had this devastating news. The ER, PR and HER2 is all about finding out what sort of cancer you have and more specifically whether it's driven by your hormones and the HER2 receptor. There are websites that will tell you what the scores mean but my guess is that you are likely either triple negative or just progesterone positive (although a score of 3 is low).

  • Hello sportingbabe and thank you for your post.

The results of your breast cancer's hormone status are what the ER - oestrogen receptor and PR - progesterone receptor mean.  Therefore, ER-0 means no oestrogen was found. PR-3 means that a low amount of progestogen was found.

HER2  - is a protein that can be found in some breast cancers , it can help the breast cancer cells grow.  HER - 0 means that no HER2 was found

Knowing the details of your oestrogen and HER2 status will help doctors know more about your situation and how best to treat you.

You might also find it helpful to read information from another charity called Breast Cancer Now. They have a really useful booklet that you can see on their website, it explains the results of a breast biopsy, click here  to see it.

I hope this has been helpful.  You would be welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
