breathlessness in lung cancer

Hello

My mum was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer 6 weeks ago.  She has declined treatment.

The only thing bothering her at the minute is increasing breathlessness. It's so debilititating for her.

GP has so far only given her a ventolin inhaler which isnt helping.

Has anyone tried any other medications that helped?

  • Hi and thank you for your post

It must be very hard watching your mum in difficulties with her breathing and possibly even a bit scary for you.

The following link  is about the different ways people can get help with their breathing. The hospital should have referred your mum to a symptom control team (or others like palliative care team as she is not having any treatment, or Macmillan nurses) so if this hasn't happened it's worth giving her specialist nurse (cns) a call. Alternatively, the GP may also be able to refer her.

There are other medications that can help with breathlessness, sometimes a small amount of morphine or a relaxant called lorazepam may be given, and you can also have oxygen at home too. There are also other ways to help with this, so I do hope you manage to speak with someone at the hospital.

Please do give us a ring if you would like to talk things through  on  Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best to you and your mum
