Anaemia worry

Hi, I am stage 4 kidney cancer and currently anaemic which is tough as I am out of breath reaching for a cup in the kitchen!
I had an infusion 5 weeks ago but now need a transfusion which is scheduled next week.
I'm obviously worried about what this means as my body must be going through red blood cells at an alarming rate? I have only been told it is either the cancerthe drug (Cabozantinib) or both which is a bit frustrating as I'd like to know what this means for the next few months etc

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to give you a very specific reply to this, as we are not directly involved in your day to day clinical care.

It could be due to the drug, or a combination of both as has been said. Anaemia is more likely to occur in cancer of the kidney. This is because your kidneys help your body to make red blood cells. Healthy kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). EPO sends a signal to the body to make more red blood cells. If your kidneys are not working as well as they should, they can’t make enough EPO. Without enough EPO, your body doesn’t know to make enough red blood cells. This means fewer red blood cells are available for carrying oxygen through your body, leading to anaemia.

So, this can be unpredictable, and due to one or more factors, and your doctors will be closely monitoring you for this.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
