Painless lump on bum cheek with out injury

Hi guys,

I have a painless lump on my bum cheek, I noticed it about a year ago and it was like a pea under the skin, didn't think any more of it and then about 2 months ago I thought I had sat on something, and noticed the lump had got a lot bigger its like a hard boiled sweet in my bum cheek... so I went to gp who tried to tell me it was my him bone in my bum cheek!.. so I asked for a second opinion and the other gp confirmed that it wasn't bone at all and there not quite sure what it is but it 1000% isn't bone. So she referred me for an ultrasound scan, im still waiting for the appointment to come through... DR google over here started looking into what it could be and things from a cyst, lipoma to soft tissue sarcoma. Now I'm freaked out, 6 years ago at age 21 my husband was diagnosed with a wild type GIST and had to have come of his stomach removed, then 7 months ago his secondary cancer came back and he had to have 3/4 of his liver removed after the hospital not telling him they found something on his liver 2 years ago... so I'm even more cautious about everything now

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are worried about what could be causing this lump on your bum, especially after your husband's situation I can understand this is playing on your mind.

Unfortunately no one on here can tell you what this is, I'm afraid and it is a matter of waiting for the ultrasound.

Most lumps and bumps have a very straightforward reason other than cancer, but if the lump changes or you develop other symptoms do let your doctor know as they may be able to speed up the referral.

I hope you know more soon and you can have some peace of mind.

In the meantime keep yourself busy with other things and avoid googling if you can.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • I have a similar issue - My lump is sitting on my gluteus maximus muscle around the sciatic nerve and I'm still waiting to see what's next, had an MRI, ultrasound and another MRI - they think it's benign - but they don't know! I am waiting to hear what's next. Consultant wants a biopsy to be sure what this is - and I am happy for this to be done - or to get it removed, just waiting the results of their MDT meeting., Your ultrasound scan should be able to give your doctor a good idea what your lump is (unless it's like mine), but as a rule these are really good at diagnosing lumps in this area. Can you actually see the lump - or can you just feel it? My lump can't be seen - it's below skin level. Let me know how you get on. Try not to worry! (I know it's difficult!)

  • Hello there Songbird68

Thanks for replying to L.S.F.2121 and sharing your experience, I'm sure it'll be helpful to them.

I'm sorry to hear you are also undergoing some tests for a lump and really hope you know more soon about what this is.

As you say times like this can be a worry but it sounds like they are close to making a decision about what the next course of action needs to be for you, in your case. So hang in there and hopefully you won't be waiting much longer.

Please do get back in touch if you need to or if you ever want to call one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we're here Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi

  • Thanks Naomi,

I hope I will at least hear their latest decision before Christmas - but I know that pressures of covid are making things slower. It's good to know I can contact someone and have a chat if I have a wobble!

  • Latest update - they still think what I have is a benign lesion, but have told GP to refer me on to general surgery for lesion removal and discharged me from their care (which is totally fime - this was found doing tests from something totally different!). GP was right on it when the letter came through and has already  done the referral (and I have the confirmation of this too). The only potential fly in the ointment is whether they will remove this as my GP pointed out - if the radiologists won't touch it - the surgeon might not either! I hope they do, benign or not, it will continue to grow, as it has done, and this will only compound the problem. I do understand why they are stalling - it's a very delicate area - a balance between losing feeling in my leg of leaving this alone, but surely at some point this is ultimately going to cause more pain, discomfort and numbness anyway, and the scarey element is without a boipsy they are still not 100% certain this is benign. In the mean time - back to waiting!

  • Hello and thanks for the update

As I mentioned before this must be a difficult time for you not knowing for sure what this lump is. It is good to hear however that your GP is on your side and doing all they can to get this resolved.

Hopefully the surgeon will see you soon so they can also assess this and what they may be able to offer you.

Unfortunately there will always be risks versus the benefits either way but hopefully a plan can be made soon.

You know where we are if you need us.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thanks for your lovely helpful reply Naomi.
