Retention of BCG fluid

Hi

My problem is that even with a catheter in place I suffer a lot of leakage of the BCG fluid (Oncotice) . It starts after about one hour from infusion and after two hours I reckon Ive peed out most of it because my gown and the bed are soaked. The cause of the inability to hold in the fluid is probably an operation I had 18 months ago  to reduce the size of my prostate which is when the bladder cancer was found. After 5 treatments I am getting some after effects (debris, urgency and frequency ) from BCG though so far these are tolerable so the nurse thinks the BCG must be having some effects. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about this ? Grateful for any input.

  • Hello Iglooblast and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are needing to have treatment for bladder cancer.

I appreciate you are worried about how quickly the BCG treatment seems to exit the bladder but try not to worry about this if you can. I assume your specialist nurse is aware of all this leaking but if not do let them know.

It seems your specialist nurse thinks the treatment is doing it's job so whilst you may not be able to hold the BCG for the recommended time hopefully it is still an effective treatment for you.

If you remain concerned do talk this through with your specialist doctor or nurse again to see if they can put your mind at ease and reassure you further.

You may have already seen our information section about bladder cancer and BCG treatment here.

Do get back to us if you have further questions or you are welcome to call our nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5 if you prefer.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
