Asbestos exposure

Going back 5-6 years ago I accidentally exposed myself to asbestos. By walking over old roofing that was piled on the floor and broke a lot of it. At the time I did not know it was asbestos and didn't know the dangers of the stuff and am now worried about the situation. It was a one time exposure, I definitely breathed some in and got it on my clothes. Just wanted to know if I am at risk of getting anything in the future?

  • Hello Joshua1998 and thanks for posting,

We are often asked about asbestos exposure - for some reason, I think the idea that we might have unknowingly put ourselves at risk can be particularly worrying.

The risk or developing an asbestos related cancer is linked to the amount of exposure, so one very short exposure isn't likely to cause harm. People who develop asbestos related cancers have usually been exposed to asbestos in their jobs, day in day out, for long periods of time (20,30 or 40 years).

The most important thing anyone can do to avoid cancer is not to smoke. If you want to look into ways to reduce cancer risk, follow this link to our website.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia .
