The unknown breast lump

Hi,

I am only 24. But I know lots of young girls lately with cancer so I am in the unknown area of anxiety.

I have found a lump on Sunday and been to the doctors and they are referring me to the breast clinic to be scanned etc. I don't feel overly worried due to not having breast cancer in the family but now it's been referred I'm feeling a bit more worried.
I have breast implants but again doesn't feel anything to do with them.

I just don't know. Is there anything to look out for? What can I do now? Is there a certain lump type?

now for the 2 week wait of the referral.....

  • Hi and thanks for posting

Finding a breast lump doesn't mean that this is always related to breast cancer - especially as breast cancer is found far more often in the older age groups and rarely in the early 20s.

At your age it's far more usual to have lumps which turn out to be cysts or benign(not cancer) lumps called fibroadenomas. Mammograms aren't carried out in people under the age of 40 as the breasts are still very dense, and ultrasound is more commonly used. If necessary, a biopsy can also be done so the cells are closely looked at under the microscope.

There's some more information about cysts and fibroadenomas here and here

Waiting for an appointment is hard but there really isn't anything else you can do, as no one will be able to say what this might be before then.

I hope it's not too long a wait

    All the best

    Wanda

  • I'm hoping age is on my side and family history and I know it doesn't help the worry...
