Breast clinic - what can I expect?

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to get some advice for anyone that's been through this themselves.

for a few months now I've had pain (an ache really ) under my right armpit, it can radiate to the breast but it's usually only on that side. It feels a bit heavy too and looks swollen in the area compared to my other armpit. Also I noticed a random blotch similar to a bruise had formed on my skin the past few months on my back which hadn't gone away

i went to the physio about this (as I was seeing them at the time) and they told me to speak to my Gp as she doesn't think it's muscle related.. I went to a gp and she said I was too young (28) for it to be anything serious and just to keep an eye on it.. I called again after 3 weeks as my physio insisted I keep on it and was told something similar and to that it's probably from picking up my daughter.. I 2 days ago had my flu jab and ran it past the nurse and she had me in with the doctor to be seen immediately face to face (before it was only 2 phone calls) this lady was totally calm and reassuring and checked my breasts - it wasn't until she was almost done she said okay, you have a lump in your breast. I was so confused as I had no idea (I honestly don't know what I'm looking for) so she referred me to the breast clinic snd I got a letter the same day saying i needed to be seen within 10 days... today I noticed my nipple inverted and doesn't come out until I push it back out which for me is unusual. I'm not going to lie I'm freaking out a little right now. I have my appointment non the 1st but I can't help but think about what to expect at the clinic as it wasn't clear it just said I may have tests and scans .. I wanted to know if a surgeon just sees you and says your too young then doesn't scan you? As to be honest after all this worry I now want proper peice of mind due to the original doctor not taking me seriously .. hope all is well but I was hoping to get some advice on what to expect and if someone had anything similar.

sorry for the long post!!

many thanks in advance x

  • Hi [@Sjanerod]‍

I came across your post because I have similar and was also looking at what happens at a first appointment. I'm so sorry you were initially dismissed by drs, I would doubt that you will be dismissed by the breast clinic though. If you feel you are so would stand your ground and ask for what you feel should be done.

I also have pain in my armpit on the one side that radiates to my breast. And found a lump in the same side. I'm 32 and sadly have a strong family history. My aunt in her 30s and my mum in her 50s. I'm personally hoping it is a cyst or something that just needs draining or a normal breast 'bump' but who knows.

Hopefully someone who has been through it can offer us some insight as what to expect.

  • Hi ladies,

I can tell you what happens at the breast clinic from my experience. It may be slightly different in order as I was referred after routine mammogram. Firstly, they are lovely! You'll be very well looked after. Expect a physical exam of your breasts, a mammogram and ultrasound of any areas of interest plus your arm pits. If the see lumps you may have biopsies taken there and then. In my experience I was told my lump was suspect there and then, other women have told me the same. So you should come away knowing a whole lot more than when you went. It's a very stressful time but I can't speak highly enough of my treatment, you'll be in excellent hands, please hold that thought.

    Good luck to you both.

  • I would just like to add that only 1 in 8 women referred turn out to have BC. Most are given the all clear .

  • Hi there!

thank you so much for your response, as it's stressful it's still comforting to know someone is in the same situation as me. I'm hoping it's a cyst or something too for the both of us! Hopefully it's nothing sinister but regardless we will find out soon (it's rare as I think only1 in 8 people attending will have it. Fingers and everything crossed for us - do let me know how it goes - my family history is strange as we have a history of blood and lung cancers mostly - my fathers side I don't know well at all so wouldn't know really :(

    let's hope it's positive x

  • Hi Jane! Thank you so much for the response, it's nice to hear an account of someone whos recently been through it i honestly appreciate ir. i suppose im just a worrywarts as i know at my agw its even rarer - thanks again, hearing your words have truely comforted me

  • It is definitely comforting to know either of us are not alone. Keep me posted on when you get an appointment. I'll be keeping positive for both of us that it is nothing to worry about!

  • I'm glad you feel a little more reassured. It's the not knowing that feels tortuous. Even though the outcome for me was that I had breast cancer, once I had my biopsy results and was booked in for surgery I felt so much better. I'm 55 btw and have just gone through menopause. Chances are you will be fine, though!

    Good luck, both.

  • Hey, I can't offer any advice as yet to see my doctor but have been through something very similar recently going to the physio instead. The pain has remained but I'm sat trying to figure out next steps as I have found what I think is a lump but again no idea what I'm looking for. Well done for going and good luck with the next steps. Sending love as I know it's difficult at this stage too with all the worrying xx

  • [@Sjanerod]‍  have you had an appointment through yet at all? How are you doing?
