Melanoma worry :-(

Hi I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice because I'm absolutely sick with worry.

I've got a lot of freckles and moles and have (stupidly) had a lot of sun exposure over the years.  I'm 42 and fair skinned.

I went to a private dermatologist in July last year and she picked up a dark, flat mole on my side and took a photo of it.  Didn't mention any issue etc.

I went back for another mole check this week and at the end she photographed this mole again and said it had changed/grown.  She mentioned that it was quite a significant growth in a short time.

She didn't appear particularly panicked but after working out my age suggested it would be worth contacting my GP to get it removed.

I'm absolutely worried sick about it.  I managed to get an urgent GP referral which I'm waiting for but have convinced myself it's melanoma.  I suffer health anxiety as it is but am really losing sleep over this.

I called the clinic back to book an appointment to get it removed just incase I couldn't get it done on NHS.  Receptionist made it clear that it Dr had been worried when she did my examination then she would have discussed prices and got my straight back in.  I'm clinging on to this bit of hope but am so worried.

It's been 16 months since it was last checked and I'm worried that's a long time.

Sorry about the long post x

  • Sorry to hear you're still waiting. Has it made you feel any better now you've had the mole removed? Hopefully you'll hear something soon.

It's a strange one isn't it - I tried getting an appointment with a private dermatologist but the wait was even longer and my NHS appointment for the excision was sooner so I'm going with that. I've been told the results can take 4 weeks after it has been removed so another wait once it's been done but I think I'll at least feel better that it has been removed.

I had a bit of a mind blank when they asked about it, it wasn't there in May when I had my last appointment and from what I recall it's appeared over the last 3-4 months and has grown to about 5-6mm in size. At first I thought it was a skin tag as I have a few of those but it's more like a red bump now.

It worried me as the consultant I spoke to was asking if I'd lost a lot of weight or had night sweats (the answer was no to both) and the appointment I've been given is an urgent one.

How were you after having the moles removed? Was the procedure itself painful?
    Xx

  • After I had my mole check with the private dermatologist where this was picked up I went home and contacted my GP and sent photos of the changes and she referred me urgently.  I think it was just because of the particular GP I got though because when I think back to seeing the dermatologist she recommended that I have it removed but her tone wasn't 'urgent' if that makes sense? I've spoken to her since telling her I'm really worried about it and that's why she agreed to extend her clinic and get me in before Xmas to remove it.  Her exact words were it's a small change, not an 'alarming' change.  What worries me is my last mole check was July 2019 and she photographed this same mole then and that's how she was able to compare the photos and pick up the changes.  I'm worried about how long that was between my appointments :-(

I do feel better now it's removed.  The procedure was fine.  She took quite a lot away so I had 11 stitches and it was over an inch long but I had no problems.  I've got a really low pain threshold but it was fine honestly.  I had to wait a couple of weeks between my mole check and getting this removed and the time went quite quickly.

Try not to worry, it sounds like you've picked this up really quickly.

Also try not to worry re GP asking about losing weight etc.... I've been to the Drs before about things and they've asked me that xx

  • Thanks so much - it's made me feel better just speaking to you on here.

It's very easy for your mind to run away with itself - mine does regularly, if the dermatologist has said it's only a small change and in her words not alarming then that has to be a positive sign even though it's been a while between appointments.

That's good to hear about the procedure, I also have a really low pain threshold and wasn't sure if I would need to try not to over do it afterwards until the stitches dissolve or are removed.

Fingers crossed you hear something next week from the dermatologist and it's all good news. Please let me know how you get on.

    xx

  • Thank you - I will do :-)

Make sure you post on here too and let me know how you get on.  Honestly though, it really does sound like you've picked this up quickly.xx

  • I hope so  I'll definitely post and let you know how I get on xx
