Awaiting Breast Clinic Referral Mastectomy BIA ALCL

Hi all , I'm new ....

I had a bi lateral mastectomy with reconstruction around 7 years ago . I was reconstructed with Allergan Natrelle implants (I was not forewarned of the risks but that's a whole other issue !....)

This brings me to the present .... one of my breasts has been very sore lately , a constant sore , achey feeling which feels bruised to touch (it's not bruised). The one with pain also appears to be a bit larger than the other breast - not hugely so but I can definitely tell and it can be seen outwardly too .

After examination , I've been referred to the breast clinic and I'm waiting for an appointment.  I'm not worried as I've been here many times before , but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of BIA ALCL?

If you were referred but didn't have it , what was the outcome ?

What were people's first symptoms ?

  • Another update - after lots of messing around I've finally been given an appointment with my plastic surgeon but it's 5 weeks away !!

This is just for a consultantation so if I need an MRI , I'm looking at another 8 weeks before I have any idea why it keeps swelling up .

I am going to ask to be put on their cancellation list but I don't want to come across as too pushy !

  • Hi PinkLadyAppleCourt. You really need to be referred to the breast clinic where they are more likely to have knowledge of BIA ALCL and will hopefully be able to rule it out for you through testing. This is the most important step. Your surgeon should be after the testing and your results will inform how the surgery is done. If you have textured implants, regardless of whether you have BIA ALCL, I think the advice is you have a full capsulectomy at the time of explant to prevent it from developing which can still happen when implants are removed if the capsule remains. They'd also want to send away some of the capsule for testing, even if the fluid tested previously was negative for BIA ALCL. Please do be more pushy. This is your health and there's nothing more important.

Can I persuade you to join the BIA ALCL Facebook group where you can get a lot more advice and support to guide you through next steps and material to educate your doctors on why you should be testing now rather than waiting for an appointment with your surgeon? If you send me a private message with your real name, I'll make sure you're accepted very quickly.
