Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi there,

Is this from after the vaccine if you don't mind me asking? What is the doctor saying?

I have had the same for 4 months too. Been given multiple inner/outer sprays & drops and now been refered to ENT who are sending me for a hearing test.

I think it may be a inner ear infection.

    Hope you feel better.

    Thanks

  • It was around a month after my second dose it started

  • I am just waiting for blood test results at the moment

  • I've been feeling very sick with it as w and hope you feel better soon as well it's horrible not knowing when it's going to end

  • What vaccine did you have I had AstraZeneca

  • Sorry to hear hope you feel better very soon.

I had 2 does of the pfizer one.

  • Thank you very much for the chat looking very much like it could be something to do with the vaccine something to take back to the doctor at least

  • I actually came across this post after experiencing a persistent sore throat on the left hand side for 6 weeks and pain in my left ear (kind of like pressure was being applied against it). Although this thread has been inactive for several months, I thought it would be worth mentioning my personal experience seeing as it was so recent (within the last 2 months!).
I was seen first by my GP the day I rang explaining my symptoms (I thought a cough I'd had several weeks earlier had caused some type of damage in my throat and it was not a big deal). I had bloods completed that day also, before having my throat examined (feeling for any swelling, or any visible damage). At that time, I was told I would be given a 2WW referral to the ENT team which obviously was horrifically surprising as I really thought it was just ongoing irritation from my cough. I quit smoking that day also having being told that was my only risk factor (I'm a healthy 24F).
Within 3 weeks I had my ENT appointment (and relevant scans) and was told there was nothing to be concerned about, that they feel it was likely an infection or silent reflux. No signs of anything scary. The feedback that I received from the ENT specialist is that often throat cancer and silent reflux can almost mirror in symptoms regarding the persistent sore throat on one side - however, of course it's still so important to reach out to your GP if you're concerned!
I felt that my GP played it safe, skipping antibiotics and reflux medication as a immediate response, with her reasoning being that she did not want to risk masking any symptoms for my ENT appointment - however I can definitely see on this thread that others have really struggled to be referred onwards to ENT.
I mainly hope that my post can reassure or reduce anxiety even if it's only in one person who reads this, that it's so easy to think worst case when you Google 'sore throat on one side', or if your waiting for an appointment with your GP or ENT.
Sending positive vibes into the universe to anyone who reads this :-)

  • Hi,

It's incredible that I found this forum today as I am currently experiencing exactly the same symptoms as you.
I've had a persistent sore throat on the left side for 3 weeks now and pain in my left ear. Since everything started with a cough, I went to GP 2 weeks ago, also thinking that I irritated my throat with the cough. He prescribed me antibiotics but the antibiotics had no effect. I start believing that I may have silent reflux or a viral infection but haven't been to ENT yet.
Did the ENT specialist give you a treatment or did the pain disappear naturally ?

  • It's really good you've been proactive in getting appointments!
I wasn't given any treatment as by the time I had my appointment my symptoms had resolved, the specialist did say if I had still had my symptoms at the point of the appointment, I would have been sent for a head and neck MRI. I can't exactly pin point why my symptoms went away, but as I mentioned in my original post I had quit smoking, but I also changed my diet (cutting out energy drinks etc) and made a conscious decision to radically accept whatever the outcome may have been, which hugely reduced my anxiety about it - so it may have been one of the things I did, or all - I'll never know!
